The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Murray Raff (ASN: 32693465), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 18 January 1945 in Luxembourg. Near Dahl, Luxembourg, Private First Class Raff volunteered to carry an urgent message to the commander of a surrounded platoon. While crawling through enemy lines he was severely wounded, but despite the pain and increasing intensity of enemy fire, he persisted in his efforts, and delivered the message which contributed immeasurably to the platoon’s escape and successful attack. Private First Class Raff’s perseverance and gallantry were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
