The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant William T. Murphy (ASN: 33126292), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 305th Engineer Battalion, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 1 November 1944 in France. Attacking with infantrymen through severe enemy fire on Abaucourt, France, Sergeant Murphy moved among his men encouraging and reorganizing his squad and administering first aid. After securing the town he advanced to the Seille River under heavy hostile fire and returned with information vital to his battalion’s operations. Sergeant Murphy’s superb leadership, fearlessness, and sincere devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
