The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) David Stetson Stevens (ASN: 0-1328534), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 11 April 1945 in Germany. When an enemy force ambushed the convoy of which Lieutenant Stevens was a member, he volunteered to destroy their position. Quickly organizing his platoon, he led a gallant charge over 400 yards of exposed and hazardous terrain, through intense hostile fire, and inspired his men to overrun and destroy the well prepared emplacements until he was mortally wounded. Lieutenant Stevens’ leadership and courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
