The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant John H. Calloway (ASN: 6970545), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 10 April 1945 in Germany. Staff Sergeant Calloway, a squad leader, boldly attacked a six-man enemy patrol and in a fierce fire fight, killed three and captured three. Later, when his platoon was delayed by machine gun and sniper fire, he exposed himself to kill the sniper and then destroy the machine gun with a grenade despite the severe fire which took his life. Staff Sergeant Calloway’s courage and gallantry were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
