The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant [then Technical Sergeant] John C. Furedi (ASN: 0-2015811), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 31 March 1945 in Germany. With the mission of assaulting and seizing Neider Mollrich, Germany, Lieutenant Furedi’s company was temporarily delayed by severe mortar, and automatic weapons fire. Exposing himself to the hostile concentrations, he contacted and inspired his men to charge through the impact area and rout the enemy from well concealed positions. The gallant leadership, initiative, and sincere devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Furedi were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
