The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Daniel R. Veglia (ASN; 42088451), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 12 February 1945 in Germany. Near Bollendorf, Germany, when his company was attacked from the flank and rear, Sergeant Veglia alone held off the enemy until his ammunition was expended. Knowing that the enemy constituted a serious threat to his company he exposed himself to the hostile forces and by threatening them, effecting their surrender. His courage and devotion to duty allowed his company to complete an important mission and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
