The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles A. S. Rigg (ASN: 0-539186), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 10 April 1945 in Germany. When heavy hostile fire temporarily delayed an attack on Schmira, Germany, Lieutenant Rigg reconnoitered a route enabling him to lead his platoon through enemy lines and disrupt their defensive action from the rear. While on reconnaissance he killed one and wounded another enemy to clear the way for his infiltration movement. His leadership and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
