The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Dean A. Pierose (ASN: 0-1052125), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 26 January 1945 in Luxembourg. While returning from a patrol near Buckholz, Luxembourg, Lieutenant Pierose found the battalion’s right flank under attack by enemy paratroopers. At great personal risk he created a diversionary action which helped repulse the attack, even though he was captured. Lieutenant Pierose’s courage, self-sacrifice, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
