The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Donald W. Champion (ASN: 36980793), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 10 April 1945 in Germany. While attacking Frienstadt, Germany, Private First Class Champion’s company was temporarily delayed by severe hostile fire. With utter disregard for safety he advanced to an exposed position from where he delivered such effective fire that his company was able to resume its advance. Despite the intensity of enemy fire he remained at his gun until killed by a sniper. His initiative, courage, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
