The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Carl G. Carlson (ASN: 39183518), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 8 February 1945 in Germany. While leading his demolition squad across the Our River, the boat overturned, but despite the intense fire he reorganized his squad and obtained more demolitions. After successfully crossing the river he made a reconnaissance under hostile fire until mortally wounded, but before being evacuated he instructed his assistant of the mission. His leadership and self-sacrifice were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
