The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Albert E. Melcolm (ASN: 34795599), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 21 January 1945 in Luxembourg. During the attack on Borschied, Luxembourg, when the battalion commander and his staff officers became casualties, and communications destroyed, Sergeant Melcolm voluntarily established a new system. He advanced through all types of severe fire to a hilltop from where he relayed messages from forward and rear elements for eleven hours, even though subjected to hostile barrages. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
