The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Nelson S. Martin (ASN: 34605153), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 3 April 1945 in Germany. At Kassel, Germany, during a severe enemy counterattack, Private First Class Martin, although wounded, braved the intense hostile fire to secure a mortar vital to the repulse of the attack. After returning, voluntarily and despite a painful wound, he remained to carry ammunition to his platoon and served as a rifleman in routing the enemy. His gallant actions, courage, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
