The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Orlando J. Fanti (ASN: 31295614), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division in Austria on 9 May 1945. In the vicinity of Kirchdorf and Krems, Austria, a companion with whom Private First Class Fanti was swimming, lost control of himself after diving into the pool. Noticing the condition of his comrade, Private First Class Fanti immediately swam to his rescue. His alertness, initiative, and thoughtfulness for his companions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
