The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Jesse M. Dunnaway (ASN: 33213264), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 10 April 1945 in Germany. Near Gispersleben, Germany, the Battalion S-3 had been severely wounded while far in front of the riflemen. On his own initiative, Technician Fifth Grade Dunnaway charged through small arms, machine gun, and mortar fire to aid the officer and evacuate him over the same dangerous route. Technician Fifth Grade Dunnaway’s courage, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty waved the officer’s life and was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
