The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Albert R. Salvatore (ASN: 33304684), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with the enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in Austria on 9 May 1945. Serving in an ammunition depot, Sergeant Salvatore observed a case of phosphorus grenades, one of which had ignited. Disregarding his own personal safety, he aided in carrying the highly inflammable grenades from the depot, saving valuable government supplies and the lives of the depot personnel. Sergeant Salvatore’s courage, quick judgment, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
