The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Edward B. Smith (ASN: 0-379633), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 19 January 1945 in Luxembourg. While attacking an objective near Nocher, Luxembourg, two platoons of Captain Smith’s company were harassed by artillery and lost direction. With disregard for personal safety he moved about the snow covered terrain still under enemy fire to reorganize and lead his platoons to the objective. Later he assisted in evacuating the wounded. Captain Smith’s leadership and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
