The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Harold I. White (ASN: 31131975), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 11 April 1945. Given the mission of severing an enemy main supply route near Erfurt, Germany, Staff Sergeant White observed that his machine gun could not stop the enemy convoys on the road. Under hostile fire he made his way back 600 yards to bring tanks into carefully selected firing positions to inflict severe casualties and losses on the enemy. His gallant leadership and constant devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
