The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Mike T. Shireman, Jr. (ASN: 37742509), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 25 January 1945 in Luxembourg. On that date, Sergeant Shireman, a rifle squad leader, led a patrol near Enscherange, Luxembourg, with the purpose of destroying an enemy machine gun which had harassed his company for a long time. Approaching the enemy positions he and his squad were subjected to intense fire. Disregarding his own personal safety, Sergeant Shireman assaulted the emplacement alone and, after killing one gunner captured two others. From his captives he learned of other enemy soldiers hiding in a nearby house. Leading the patrol to the house he placed them in positions from which they could cover his advance and alone he entered the building to capture twelve armed enemy soldiers. Sergeant Shireman’s leadership, bravery, and courageous devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
