The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) David R. Caffrey (ASN: 0-1322203), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 18 November 1944 in France. During the action near Villers, France, on 18 November 1944, Lieutenant Caffrey, heavy machine gun platoon leader, showed outstanding leadership in maneuvering his guns against enemy strongpoints and registered devastating fire which forced the enemy to withdraw. He continuously exposed himself and though wounded, refused to leave his position. Through his resourcefulness the work of the rifle company was considerably lessened. Such courage and aggressiveness were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
