The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Robert E. Matteson (ASN: 37575990), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th CIC Detachment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 12 May 1945 in Austria. On that date, after learning of the hideout of Gestapo Chief Kaltenbrunner and SS guards, Special Agent Matteson organized and led a patrol at night over the dangerous glacial trails to their mountain retreat. Dressed in Austrian clothes, Special Agent Matteson approached the cabin alone and unarmed and, after repeatedly knocking on the door, aroused the occupants who were prepared to fight until they observed the patrol approaching. Breaking down the door Special Agent Matteson and his men captured Kaltenbrunner, his aid Arthur Scheidler, two SS guards, and found two machine pistols, four rifles, two pistols, and a submachine gun with a large supply of ammunition. Special Agent Matteson’s careful planning and fearless execution of a dangerous mission against an armed enemy of the most vicious and desperate type are a credit to himself and to the armed forces of the United States.
