The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Private] Clinton C. McCollum (ASN: 31335894), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 28 March 1945 in Germany. During the assault on Hochheim, Germany, on 28 March 1945, a platoon of Company F, 2d Battalion, 319th Infantry, upon entering the town was confronted by an enemy strongpoint. Automatic fire seriously wounded four men and repulsed repeated efforts of the men to reach their fallen comrades. Staff Sergeant McCollum dashed across a courtyard, rendered aid to the more seriously wounded, and carried each to safety. His action undoubtedly saved their lives and inspired the platoon to rout the enemy. Such courage and aggressiveness were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
