The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Howard Daniels, Jr. (ASN: 33596716), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 702d Tank Destroyer Battalion, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 18 February 1945 in Germany. On that date, the tank in which Corporal Daniels served as a gunner was hit by enemy anti-tank fire during a fierce engagement near Stockgit, Germany. Even though his tank was immobilized, the driver and bow gunner killed, and he himself wounded, Corporal Daniels remained at his gun and by accurate firing drove the foe from its well camouflaged weapon, permitting the other tanks of his platoon to reach the objective. Corporal Daniels’ courage, tenacious bravery, and sincere devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
