The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade Jack Conley (ASN: 35538987), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 811th Tank Destroyer Battalion, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 2 April 1945 in Germany. On that date, after his tank destroyer had been disabled in a fierce encounter near Hengershausen, Germany, Technician Fourth Grade Conley, a tank driver, saw the gunner of a supporting destroyer trying to free himself from his burning vehicle. Disregarding the intense fire from the enemy infantry and anti-tank weapons, Technician Fourth Grade Conley ran across an open field to the burning destroyer, removed the injured gunner, and after extinguishing his burning clothes by smothering the flames with his own body he carried the injured man across his back to the safety of a ravine and thence to an aid station thus saving the wounded soldier’s life. Technician Fourth Grade Conley’s courage, resourcefulness, and devotion to his comrade and to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
