The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Joseph H. Herbert (ASN: 36598672), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 26 January 1945 in Luxembourg. While establishing a defensive position near Wilwerwilte, Luxembourg, on 26 January 1945, Technical Sergeant Herbert’s platoon was subjected to intense enemy machine gun fire from three sides. Ordering his men to withdraw to a more tenable position, Technical Sergeant Herbert remained to cover the withdrawal by firing at the enemy. While moving to the new offensive area two squads were delayed by a machine gun firing from the flank. Technical Sergeant Herbert, disregarding the danger, advanced and captured the enemy gun crew after a fierce fire fight in which he also killed two enemy soldiers who were attempting to fire a rocket at his men. The aggressive leadership, courage, and loyal devotion to duty displayed by Technical Sergeant Herbert were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
