The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Anthony S. DiDonato (ASN: 42133505), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 26 January 1945 in Luxembourg. On that date, as Private DiDonato’s platoon pushed forward in the attack on Neidhausen, Luxembourg, they were met by severe enemy machine gun fire. Voluntarily, Private DiDonato assaulted the machine gun position capturing the gunner and destroying the gun. Guarding his prisoner he moved on alone into the town and in clearing six houses captures six prisoners one of whom was an officer. Private DiDonato’s courage, aggressiveness, and sincere devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
