Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 133 (May 22, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant Philip L. Llewellyn (ASN: 33323480), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 2 April 1945 in Germany. During the attack near Kassel, Germany, on 2 April 1945, the anti-tank platoon in which Technical Sergeant Llewellyn served as platoon sergeant was fired on by six enemy tanks as the anti-tank guns were being emplaced. In order to protect the guns and to effectively return the enemy fire the platoon leader ordered a withdrawal to a more advantageous firing position. Technical Sergeant Llewellyn voluntarily manned a .50 caliber machine gun and in the face of direct fire from the enemy tanks effectively protected the withdrawal of the rest of the platoon. In the action he was mortally wounded. Technical Sergeant Llewellyn’s courage, initiative, and supreme devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
