The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Andrew E. Ciarniello (ASN: 35925398), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 26 December 1944 in Luxembourg. On that date, Sergeant Ciarniello, a mortar section leader, was detailed to support the entrance of a rifle platoon into the town of Scheidel, Luxembourg. The advance of the rifle platoon was hampered by small arms fire. Upon surveying the tactical situation Sergeant Ciarniello determined that the use of mortars would endanger the lives of his comrades. Therefore, he secured an automatic rifle and without regard for his own safety advanced and so effectively fired on the enemy positions that their fire was neutralized. He then led the assault into the town until wounded. His bravery, leadership, and sincere devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
