    Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 132 ( May 21, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Frederick A. Joyner (ASN: 34946135), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 21 March 1945 in Germany. On that date, during an assault near Neustadt, Germany, Company B, 1st Battalion, 318th Infantry, in which Private First Class Joyner served as a machine gunner, was subjected to intense fire from three enemy machine guns. Realizing the need for immediate action, Private First Class Joyner ran to the center of the highway, set up his light machine gun, and so effectively delivered fire on the enemy guns that one was destroyed, another crew abandoned their gun, and the third surrendered. Private First Class Joyner’s gallant courage, initiative, and loyal devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
