The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Henry G. Tweten (ASN: 0-1328096), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 22 February 1945 in Germany. During the attack on Obergeckler, Germany, on 22 February 1945, Lieutenant Tweten was painfully wounded in the leg but continued to lead his platoon in attacking and seizing its objective. Still refusing evacuation, Lieutenant Tweten consolidated the position and inspired his men to repel a strong enemy counterattack of tanks and infantry, after which he was evacuated with a fractured leg. Lieutenant Tweten’s courage, aggressive leadership, and sincere devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
