The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant George C. McKinney (ASN: 33278368), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States from 7 to 10 February 1945 in Germany. During that period, during a struggle to consolidate a bridgehead across the Our River into the Siegfried Line near Wallendorf, Germany, all supplies were hand carried from the assault boats to the fighting soldiers. Technical Sergeant McKinney, a platoon guide, was assigned to lead a detail on this important mission. Despite the intense mortar, artillery, and rocket fire falling in the area, Technical Sergeant McKinney led his detail throughout each night to maintain adequate supplies. On one occasion, when challenged by an enemy patrol, he raised his hands and, walking to the patrol leader, kicked him in the abdomen, continuing with his work after the patrol was routed. Technical Sergeant McKinney’s courage, aggressiveness, and sincere devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
