Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 129 (May 18, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Sergeant] Warren R. Chain (ASN: 35331529), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 10 February 1945 in Germany. During an attack within the Siegfried Line on 10 February 1945, Staff Sergeant Chain, a platoon guide assumed command of his platoon and received an order to clear the company’s flank near Wallendorf, Germany. Devising a flanking movement, Staff Sergeant Chain ordered one squad to move to the enemy’s flank under the cover of a protective fire from the rest of the platoon, during which Staff Sergeant Chain personally destroyed an enemy machine gun by rocket fire. The plan worked and fifteen enemy soldiers were surprised and captured. Staff Sergeant Chain’s courage, initiative, and skillful leadership were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
