Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 117 (May 2, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Milton C. Wilhoite (ASN: 35797481), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 2 April 1945 in Germany. At Kassel, Germany, on 2 April 1945, a strong enemy tank and infantry attack threatened to overrun the Battalion Command Post. Private Wilhoite, an ammunition bearer, volunteered and accompanied the Battalion Commander in stalking two enemy tanks damaged by rocket fire. When all the ammunition was expended, Private Wilhoite returned over exposed terrain to obtain an additional supply and then aided in burning a tank whose crew had been driven off by their accurate fire. Private Wilhoite’s courage and untiring devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
