Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 75 (March 16, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Llewellyn H. Farden (ASN: 0-527087), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 23 December 1944 in Luxembourg. On that date, during an attack on Lupert Ridge near Ettelbruck, Luxembourg, Lieutenant Farden observed that infantrymen could not cross Lupert Ridge because of heavy enemy artillery fire. Leaving the comparative safety of the reverse slope he moved to an exposed position in view of the enemy. There he remained for eighteen hours directing effective artillery fire and thereby neutralized the enemy artillery and making it possible for the infantry to gain its objective. Lieutenant Farden’s courage, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
