The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Daniel H. Simmons (ASN: 0-1049847), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 4 April 1945 in Germany. During the fight for Kassel, Germany, on 4 April 1945, Lieutenant Simmons, a rifle platoon leader, discovered a strategic bridge held by the enemy which formed the only escape route for enemy troops in the north and northwestern part of the city. Leading his platoon in a brilliant surprise attack he captured the bridge intact and supervised the removal of demolition charges from its supports. During the night Lieutenant Simmons captured over two hundred enemy soldiers as they attempted to escape over the bridge and thus greatly speeded the occupation of the city. The courage, initiative, and skillful leadership displayed by Lieutenant Simmons were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
