    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Matthew L. Dwyer (ASN: 0-1294994), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States from 28 March 1945 to 3 April 1945 in Germany. During that period, Captain Dwyer led an infantry battalion from Kastel, Germany, to Kassel, Germany, a distance of over one hundred twenty-five miles, climaxing this operation by assaulting and seizing the city of Kassel. Personally leading his troops when severe opposition developed, Captain Dwyer, by his initiative and courage greatly contributed to the total of eleven hundred fifty enemy troops captured and two hundred eighty killed. The courage, aggressiveness, and brilliant leadership displayed by Captain Dwyer were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
