The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Robert E. Wilson (ASN: 33873705), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 11 February 1945 in Germany. During an infantry platoon attack near Biesdorf, Germany, on 11 February 1945, Staff Sergeant Wilson, a squad leader, assumed command of his platoon when all his superior officers were wounded by intense mortar fire. While leading the platoon against a well concealed enemy pillbox, Staff Sergeant Wilson was wounded but, realizing the need of adequate leadership, he continued to control the platoon until the objective was attained and the position consolidated. His courage, initiative, and sincere devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
