The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Andrew E. Holmes (ASN: 0-1170421), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 7 February 1945 in Germany. On that date, Lieutenant Holmes, an artillery observer, made the hazardous crossing of the Our River in support of a rifle company and through his effective registration of artillery fire aided them in penetrating well into the enemy lines. On the following day, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, Lieutenant Holmes moved to the aid of an adjoining company which was delayed by heavy enemy fire. Exposing himself repeatedly, he adjusted a smoke screen in front of the riflemen to enable them to dig in. The personal bravery, resourcefulness, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Holmes was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
