The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Emery E. Freeman (ASN: 38209325), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 26 November 1944 in France. During an attack on St. Avold, France, on 26 November 1944, Staff Sergeant Freeman ordered the machine gun section which he commanded to move forward in order to relieve pressure on a rifle platoon delayed by heavy enemy fire. All of the members of one of his gun crews were wounded leaving no one to man the gun. Disregarding personal danger, Staff Sergeant Freeman, alone, carried the heavy gun and a box of ammunition two hundred and fifty yards into a position from which he so effectively fired that the riflemen were able to move to cover. Ordering his men to withdraw, he then assisted his wounded men to safety after securing the weapon. Staff Sergeant Freeman’s courage, aggressiveness, and sincere devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
