The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Frank W. Zachman (ASN: 0-1184006), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the *** Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 8 January 1945 in Luxembourg. On that date, during an attempt by the enemy to retake the town of Dahl, Luxembourg, which had been recently liberated, Lieutenant Zachman voluntarily advanced over four hundred yards of open terrain despite withering machine gun fire to his artillery observation post. From this location he adjusted emergency concentrations of artillery to within fifty yards of his own position, contributing immeasurably to the rout of the enemy. Lieutenant Zachman’s courage, initiative, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
