Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 77 (March 18, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Edwin C. Schultz (ASN: 36889250), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 13 February 1945 in Germany. In an infantry attack near Biesdorf, Germany, on 13 February 1945, Sergeant Schultz, a squad leader, observed that the company advance had been limited by an enemy machine gun in a wooded area. Armed with a light machine gun he advanced three hundred yards on an encircling movement and approached the enemy from the rear. At fifty yards he opened fire, killing the entire crew and protecting the riflemen. Sergeant Schultz’s courage, initiative, and devotion to duty permitted the company to advance without casualties and was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
