Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 105 (April 17, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles W. Garbutt (ASN: 0-1299227), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 25 January 1945 in Luxembourg. On that date, while Lieutenant Garbutt, a company commander, was leading a five-man reconnaissance patrol into Wilwerwiltz, Luxembourg, an enemy mine explosion injured two of his men. After treating the casualties and arranging for their evacuation, he completed his mission. Thereafter he led his company into the town, set up outpost positions, and sent out patrols in preparation for an attack on the following day. On 26 January 1945, Lieutenant Garbutt led a platoon across the Clert River to establish a bridgehead, and then to spearhead the attack on the town of Pintsche, Luxembourg. The capture of the town came as a result of a skillfully executed flanking maneuver by the platoon led by Lieutenant Garbutt. His conspicuous bravery, brilliant leadership, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
