The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Theodore L. Mendelssohn (ASN: 36881475), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 27 January 1945 in Luxembourg. While operating with his tank platoon in support of an infantry battalion, Sergeant Mendelssohn saw a seriously wounded man crawl from a tank which had been hit by direct enemy fire. Sergeant Mendelssohn, without hesitation crawled to the aid of the wounded man. Through Sergeant Mendelssohn’s efforts, exerted under heavy enemy small arms, mortar, and artillery fire, the soldier was evacuated and his life saved. The personal bravery, determination, and unselfish devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Mendelssohn were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
