The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Frederick E. Newman (ASN: 31074405), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 22 February 1945 in Germany. On that date, during an attack against Birendorf, Germany, the tank destroyer in which Sergeant Newman was gun commander became mired in the soft mud. Realizing the necessity of neutralizing the tank and anti-tank fire directed at his position, Sergeant Newman and a companion elected to remain at their weapons and effectively fired on an approaching enemy tank. When his companion raised the turret for better visibility, another hostile tank opened fire mortally wounding him. Observing his critical condition, Sergeant Newman immediately carried him through intense small arms fire to the protection of friendly lines. His courage, bravery, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
