The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technician Fourth Grade Lloyd E. Diemel (ASN: 36255231), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in Luxembourg on 14 February 1945. While mechanics were repairing a two and one half ton truck the barn in which they were working caught fire. Realizing that the rapidly spreading flames would soon detonate the load of artillery shells on the vehicle, Technician Fourth Grade Diemel, with utter disregard for his own safety, backed the truck from the barn although the front wheels had been removed. Technician Fourth Grade Diemel’s courage, resourcefulness, and presence of mind saved the lives of those around him and much valuable equipment, and was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
