The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Lewis Kaufman (ASN: 20402326), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 24 December 1944 in Luxembourg. During a pressing counterattack at Heiderscheid, Luxembourg, on 24 December 1944, the command post was threatened. First Sergeant Kaufman coolly organized all available clerks, wiremen, and messengers into a defense and was an inspiration in the repulse of the enemy. Though wounded he refused to leave his fire position until the threat was overcome. Such aggressiveness and courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
