The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Charles S. Schroeder (ASN: 0-1016079), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 24 December 1944 in Luxembourg. On that date, while supporting an infantry attack on Ringel, Luxembourg, Lieutenant Schroeder, tank platoon leader, received fire from enemy tanks on a nearby commanding ground. Although two of his tanks had been disabled, Lieutenant Schroeder ordered an attack upon the enemy and led his platoon until enemy fire destroyed his command tank. With utter disregard for his own personal safety, Lieutenant Schroeder stood on the tank and extricated the wounded members of his crew, evacuating them to safety through intense enemy artillery and small arms fire. His courage, leadership, and constant devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
