(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant William A. Carter, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action on 11 April 2003 in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, in Iraq. On that date Sergeant Carter’s unit was en rout to a raid when they were caught in a near ambush. His squad was tasked to dismount and clear the enemy from an intersection. Sergeant Carter and Specialist Nathaniel Keaton were dispatched to destroy an enemy machine gun bunker, with no supporting fire. Without regard for their personal safety, the two soldiers charged through the attack and killed the two enemy soldiers, a critical move that saved the rest of their squad from direct machine gun fire in their open position in the intersection. Sergeant Carter’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 3d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
