(Citation and/or Narrative Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Staff Sergeant Anthony Skirko, United States Army, was awarded the Soldier’s Medal for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, while serving as a fire support officer with 2d Battalion, 14th Infantry, in Iraq. Staff Sergeant Skirko distinguished himself by rescuing Soldiers from a Humvee that was rolled over in a canal. While he was on a search-and-attack mission in the Shakriyah Triangle, Iraq he heard that a vehicle in his patrol was turned over in a canal and he ran to the site. Upon arriving to the site Staff Sergeant Skirko took his gear off and submerged himself into water thus opening the door to free the trapped Soldiers. After the door to the Humvee was opened he crawled into the vehicle and pulled the Soldiers out.
