The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Peter Adams Newell, United States Army, for gallantry in action during ground combat operations against enemy forces in Fallujah, Iraq, from 8 to 20 November 2004, while Commanding the 2d Battalion, 2d Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry division, in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. His leadership and relentless attitude towards the enemy motivated his troops to fight a tough and determined enemy in a complex urban environment. His tactical actions and decisions brought the full spectrum of his Task Force’s combat capabilities to bear down on the enemy. He seamlessly integrated direct and indirect fires from ground, artillery and close air support to win the close and deep fight. His tactical decision making was responsible for advancing his task force deeper and faster into the heart of Fallujah than any other unit in Regimental Combat Team SEVEN, and the FIRST Marine Division. Lieutenant Colonel Newell’s dedication to his fellow soldiers on the battlefield upholds the finest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, Multi-National Corps – Iraq, and the United States Army.
