The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Charles Elliott (ASN: 36583841), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 31 January 1945 in Luxembourg. On that date, while reconnoitering along the Sure River in Luxembourg, Private First Class Elliott located activity on the enemy side of the river. With a companion he was returning to warn the patrol leader when the enemy fired a grenade at them. Running to escape, his companion fell on a mine, but Private First Class Elliott continued on to report the situation. Disregarding the danger, he returned to his wounded comrade and attempted to carry him to safety. When the rest of the patrol found the two men, Private First Class Elliott also had been wounded but was still trying to carry his comrade to the rear. His courage, determination, and sincere devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
